"real" minnesotans

the proof of R and K's Minnesota upbringing is slowly being established. yesterday was their third state fair (pretty impressive for a 2 year old). And they had the required fair food (fried cheese curds and mini-donuts) and visited the required sites of the fair (miracle of birth center for baby animals, machinery hill for old and new tractors, the circus train, and some crafts of the 4H variety). it was a good and exhausting time. so much so that mom and dad fell asleep. mom first in the rocking chair in R's room. Dad on the sofa. I joined ruskin on the sofa where we both slept until 4:30 AM when roomba turned on. so we turned it off and went to sleep. The nights of 2-4 hours of sleep caught up to us. the end of the summer crush is hitting us hard.

the kids had a great time with auntie hot hot at the fair -- she has been going since she was a wee one. i think going with her will be an annual tradition. the fair certainly draws a cross-section of MN. there were many Asian Americans, Chicano and Latino families, and GLBT folks around. not as many somali and african american Minnesotans which is interesting. but it was the perfect day and it is interesting to think about how this will shape my children's understanding of themselves and their childhoods. we aren't in ahmedabad anymore by any means. my children are not immigrants like my parents and i were. nor are they closer to the immigrant experience like my brother and sister. they are on their own paths. i hope i am well equipped to help them.
